Each and every moment is an opportunity for learning and growth. I remember once hearing Ram Dass talk about how his guru came to him in the form of a microphone because it was not the type he requested and it led him to becoming angry and reactive. When I first heard this, I didn’t want to embrace this teaching because I still I didn’t want to face any of my lessons. So I continued to feel so lost and confused, wondering “why?” all the time.

While there’s nothing wrong with experiencing emotions, if those emotions give birth to actions, then they are not aligned with Spirit. For example, I notice when I get angry and start huffing and puffing and blowing down houses, my sleeve gets caught on something (which of course makes me angrier). In that moment, my “lesson” may be to slow down and take care with my body/movements, not reacting in anger, and just watch the anger instead.

Of course, this is easier said than done, which is why it constitutes a “practice”. All we can do is keep practicing, being in the present moment as much as possible so we can recognize our teachers when they come to us, even if they look like microphones.
